Overview
The first member of Velodyne's LIDAR product line is the HDL-64E, a 64-element LIDAR sensor that delivers a 360-degree HFOV and a 26.8-degree VFOV. It features frame rates of 5-15 Hz and 1.5 million data points per second. The point cloud it generates is a massive leap forward in terrain and environment understanding. Both distance and intensity data are provided in the Ethernet output packet payload.

The HDL-64E was used by five out of six of the finishing teams at the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, including the winning and second place teams. In fact, some teams relied exclusively on the HDL-64E for the information about the environment used to navigate an autonomous vehicle through a simulated urban environment.

The HDL-64E is also in use for ground truth testing, military autonomous navigation, and mapping/surveying applications.

Velodyne will continue developments in this area to add new features and offer multiple configurations in the future.
